Workshops - An Overview

THRIVE Live

Fri AM

Apnoeic oxygenation techniques including THRIVE are becoming more common internationally, but are still rarely used in South Africa. This 6-hour workshop will introduce clinicians to the concept and practical approach, and includes training on sedation and TCI/TIVA for airway procedures. Participants will be able to observe and take part in live cases in two parallel operating theatres.

The Contaminated Airway, SALAD and VL Skills

Sat PM

Sat PM

Learn high-quality videolaryngoscopy skills and then how to apply them when faced with the nemesis of  VL: The Contaminated Airway! This fun 2-hour workshop includes messy hands-on time with the rapidly regurgitating SALAD Simulator, where participants can acquire the skills to perform Suction-Assisted Laryngoscopy and Airway Decontamination.

Endoscopic Tracheal Dilatation

Sat PM

The advent of non-occlusive airway balloons has allowed the development of techniques for endoscopic tracheal dilatation with conventional ventilation. Participants in this 2-hour workshop will learn how to perform this technique through supraglottic airways, as well as discussing more traditional methods using rigid bronchoscopes and suspension laryngoscopy.

Rigid endoscopy

Sat PM

Rigid endoscopes are powerful airway management tools in the hands of well-trained practitioners, and have been rescuing challenging airways since long before the era of video technology. Let by world-reknowned expert, Prof Fritz Pühringer, this 2-hour workshop will cover priciples or working with rigid intubating endscopes including devices such as video stylets and the Bonfils, and provide hands-on training in dual endoscopy, retromolar intubation and how to use rigid bronchoscopes to establish an airway.

Lung isolation and the difficult thoracic airway

Sat PM

Lung isolation and one-lung ventilation is essential to facilitate a growing list of surgical procedures, and can be challenging at the best of times. When combined with a difficult airway, a sound strategy and team planning is essential. This 2-hour workshop will expose participants to a variety of airway management strategies for lung isolation, and provide opportunities to practice with essential equipment.

Technology in Airway Teaching

Sat PM

Sun AM

Technology for teaching airway management is increasing in fidelity, complexity and impact. This fun 2-hour workshop will include gameified airway trainers such as “Legoscopy”, blended simulators, virtual reality, mobile-device training platforms and virtual reality. Participants will be able to increase their skills while learning about how to integrate more advanced technologies into their training programs.

Prehospital and confined space airway management

Sun AM

Airway management outside of the hospital brings unique challenges from the environment, urgency, access, positioning, limited equipment and staff. This 2-hour workshop will introduce participants to strategies for highly successful prehospital interventions which have been optimised through years of experience and simulation…many of which translate back to good habits in more controlled circumstances.

Awake Tracheal Intubation

Sun AM

Awake tracheal intubation is a critical skill for the airway practitioner when faced with anticipated difficulty, whether it be in the emergency department, operating theatre or intensive care unit. The most critical skill for success is effective anaesthesia of the airway, using topical, atomised, nebulised or injected local anaesthesia. In this highly interactive 2-hour workshop, we will demonstrate live topicalization and perform self-mutual endoscopy on willing workshop participants. Not to be missed!
